Can You Get High from Topicals? The Truth About THC and Your Skin

There is a lot of misinformation swirling around cannabis topicals. If you’ve been hesitant to try a THC-infused topical because you’re worried about feeling "baked" at work or while running errands, you aren't alone.

The short answer? It is extremely unlikely that you will get high from a topical.

And I don’t just mean "unlikely if you have a high tolerance." I mean it is virtually impossible for anyone, regardless of their experience with cannabis, to feel psychoactive effects from a standard balm, lotion, or body oil.

Why THC on the Skin Doesn’t Cause a High

To understand why topicals won't make you feel "stony," we have to look at how THC actually works.

To feel a high, THC must travel to your brain and attach to specific receptors. When you smoke or ingest cannabis, the cannabinoids enter your bloodstream (either through the lungs or the digestive system) and are delivered to the brain through the bloodstream.

Your skin, however, is a different story.

  1. The Barrier Force: Your skin’s primary job is to keep things out of your body. It is a highly effective shield.

  2. Local vs. Systemic: When you apply a topical, the cannabinoids primarily interact with the receptors in your skin and the localized tissues underneath.

  3. The Bloodstream Barrier: It is incredibly difficult for THC molecules to penetrate the skin deeply enough to enter the bloodstream in significant amounts. Even products labeled as "transdermal" struggle to deliver enough THC to the brain to trigger a psychoactive shift.

By the time a tiny fraction of THC might reach your bloodstream, it’s far too diluted to have an appreciable effect on your brain.

If it Doesn't Get You High, Why Use THC at all?

This brings up a vital point in cannabis wellness: THC is about so much more than the "high."

While many people enjoy the shifted mindset that comes with inhalation or edibles, the peripheral benefits of THC are where topicals really shine. When applied to the skin, THC (along with CBD, CBN, and other cannabinoids) works "on-site" to:

  • Soothe localized inflammation.

  • Relieve deep muscle or joint discomfort.

  • Improve circulation in the specific area where it’s applied.

Just because you don’t feel high doesn’t mean the cannabinoids aren't hard at work. Think of it as targeted relief without the "head fog."

The Bottom Line

Cannabis topicals, even those packed with THC, won’t leave you feeling intoxicated. They are designed to stay local, providing all-day relief for your skin and muscles while leaving your head perfectly clear.

If you're looking for a way to incorporate the healing power of cannabis into your routine without the psychoactive side effects, topicals are an excellent place to start.
