CBD has become increasingly popular among pet owners, and it's easy to understand why there's so much curiosity. Our pets are family, and we want to make thoughtful choices about the products we give them.

But cannabis and pets require special care. Animals can respond to cannabinoids differently than people do, and products made for humans aren't necessarily appropriate for pets.

Here's what pet owners should know before introducing CBD into their pet's routine.

What Is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the many naturally occurring cannabinoids found in cannabis and hemp.

Unlike THC, CBD is not intoxicating. CBD products for pets are available in many forms, including oils and drops.

Research involving CBD and animals continues to develop, and there is still a great deal we don't know. Pet owners should be cautious about broad claims that CBD can treat particular diseases or symptoms in animals.

If your pet has a medical condition or you're considering CBD for a specific health concern, talk with your veterinarian.

Do Pets Have an Endocannabinoid System?

Yes. Like humans, dogs, cats, and other mammals have an endocannabinoid system, commonly called the ECS.

The ECS includes naturally occurring signaling molecules and receptors found throughout the body. Researchers continue to study this system and how plant-derived cannabinoids such as CBD interact with it.

The existence of an endocannabinoid system, however, doesn't mean that CBD has been proven to treat particular conditions in pets.

What About THC?

THC deserves particular caution around animals.

Pets can be much more sensitive to THC than humans, and exposure can cause adverse effects. Human cannabis products may contain amounts of THC that are inappropriate for pets.

For that reason, don't assume that a cannabis product you use yourself is also appropriate for your dog or cat.

If you suspect your pet has accidentally consumed THC or another cannabis product and is showing unusual symptoms, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly.

Choose Products Made With Pets in Mind

When choosing a CBD product for your pet, look for a product that clearly identifies its cannabinoid content and ingredients.

We also recommend looking for products that are:

  • THC-free

  • Clearly labeled with the amount of CBD

  • Made with a simple ingredient list

  • Tested for cannabinoid content and contaminants

  • Easy to measure consistently

Be especially careful with human products that contain additional ingredients. Something that's perfectly ordinary for a person may not be appropriate for an animal.

Start With Your Veterinarian

If you're considering CBD as part of your pet's routine, your veterinarian is an important resource—particularly if your pet has an existing health condition, takes medications, is elderly, or has special health needs.

Cannabinoid research in animals is still evolving, and your veterinarian can help you make decisions based on your individual pet rather than generalized claims online.

Meet Proof Pet CBD Drops

We created Proof Pet CBD Drops specifically with pets in mind.

Our Pet CBD Drops are a simple, THC-free CBD formula that's easy to measure and add to your pet's routine.

Simple ingredients. Precisely measured CBD. Made for pets.

As with any product you introduce to your pet, follow the product directions and pay attention to how your individual pet responds.

The Bottom Line

Pet owners have more CBD choices than ever before, but more products don't necessarily mean more certainty.

Research into CBD and animals continues to evolve. Choose products carefully, avoid making assumptions based on human cannabis use, and talk with your veterinarian when you have questions about your pet's health.

Our pets depend on us to make thoughtful decisions for them. That's reason enough to keep things simple, informed, and cautious.
